PNG to WebP Converter

Shrink PNG screenshots and graphics by converting them to WebP, a format that keeps transparency while making files much smaller. Runs fully in your browser.

Why convert PNG to WebP

A WebP file is usually 25 to 35 percent smaller than an equivalent JPG, and for many PNG graphics it is far smaller than the PNG itself. Smaller images load faster, which improves site speed, mobile data use and your Core Web Vitals scores such as Largest Contentful Paint.

Unlike JPG, WebP keeps transparent backgrounds, so logos and icons can be converted without a white box appearing behind them.

Browser support

WebP is supported by Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and Opera in their current versions, covering the vast majority of visitors. Very old browsers and some email clients and desktop apps cannot show it.

If you publish on a website, use the picture element with a PNG or JPG fallback when you must support legacy software. Otherwise you can serve WebP directly.

Lossy or lossless results

This tool uses the quality slider to encode lossy WebP. A value around 80 to 90 looks almost identical to the source for most images and is dramatically smaller. For crisp interface screenshots with fine text, raise the quality or keep the PNG.

Convert from the original PNG whenever you can, because re-encoding an already compressed image stacks artifacts.

Frequently asked questions

Does WebP keep transparency?

Yes, the alpha channel is preserved.

How much smaller will my file be?

Often 30 to 80 percent smaller for photos and screenshots, depending on content.

Will every browser open the result?

All current major browsers do. Some older programs do not.

Can I upload WebP to social networks?

Many accept it now, but some still require JPG or PNG. Check the platform.

Should I convert logos to WebP?

For web use, yes: WebP keeps transparency and is smaller. Keep the original PNG as your editable master, and use SVG when the logo is vector based.

Is WebP good for screenshots with text?

Usually yes at quality 85 or higher. If small text looks soft, raise the quality a little, or keep PNG for that particular screenshot.
