AVIF to JPG Converter
Turn AVIF pictures into JPG files that open in any editor, printer or upload form. The conversion is done locally in your browser, and your files are never sent anywhere.
What AVIF is
AVIF is a modern image format based on the AV1 video codec. It can be around 50 percent smaller than JPG at similar quality and supports transparency, HDR and wide color. Sites use it to cut image weight and improve loading speed.
Because it is newer than WebP, support is narrower in desktop software, even though current Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari display it.
Why convert AVIF to JPG
You may have saved an AVIF from a website and found that your photo viewer, office program or social network will not open it. JPG is universal, so it solves that immediately.
The trade-off is size. The JPG will usually be larger than the AVIF, because AVIF compresses far better. For publishing on your own site, keep the AVIF; use JPG for sharing and compatibility.
Notes on the result
Transparent areas are flattened onto white, because JPG cannot store alpha. HDR images are converted to standard dynamic range, so colors can look slightly different.
Pick quality 85 to 90 to avoid adding visible artifacts on top of the AVIF compression. Large AVIF files can take a few seconds to decode, so batches are processed one at a time.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my JPG bigger than the AVIF?
AVIF is a more efficient codec, so the same picture needs fewer bytes.
Which browsers show AVIF?
Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari.
Is transparency kept?
No, JPG has none, so it becomes white.
Is there a size limit?
50 MB per file.
Can I keep the AVIF for my website?
Yes. Convert to JPG only for sharing and compatibility, and keep the AVIF where you control the browser support, such as your own pages.
Does the converter handle AVIF files saved from websites?
Yes. The format is detected from the file contents, so a .avif download or a renamed file both work, and each result keeps its original name with a .jpg extension.
